Stop Procrastinating and Make a Difference!

Our guest, Brenda Jones did a lot more on our show than simply tell us about her company, Hug Wraps. She imparted to us that fiery  spirit that says, “Take action now!”

When Brenda got cancer, she got angry! Angry at the situation and angry at that ridiculous, ugly hospital gown that takes away one’s dignity and simply makes you feel like a sick person.  (while leaving you freezing cold in that hospital room to boot!)

Brenda says that by the time she got home from her first treatment, she had in mind to make herself a better gown. In her words,

“I couldn’t control the cancer and the treatments, but I could control what I wore!”

As she walked in her door from that treatment, her phone  was ringing. As she vented to her friend on the other line, she heard the words, “Well, you are in luck. I’m a seamstress, and I’ll teach you how to sew.”

As soon as she hung up the phone, Brenda headed to the store and got everything she would need to get started on her new hospital gown, including buying a used sewing machine. After all, Brenda figured she would only be making ONE gown – for herself!  Little did she know that she would make hundreds of these gowns for cancer patients everywhere. With each gown she is symbolically  giving a hug and speeding someones healing.

Please listen to this great show! Not only will you be inspired by the fabulous story, but you will find yourself able to overcome procrastination and make a difference with YOUR  calling. Rise up Divas! We know you have it in you!

Monitoring Your Business: From Social Media To Customer Service

Towards the LightOne of the most important aspects of marketing your company is understanding why people like your products and how they are finding them so that you can make your products better and pursue the most lucrative channels of finding new customers. But how can you find out this information if you can’t understand your customers? Although you can’t sit down and have a cup of coffee with each customer to get their feedback, you can begin to understand your customers’ demographics, desires, preferences, and more by tracking your customers through different aspects of your marketing campaign.

Although tracking customers used to be the job of survey takers standing in malls, today there is more sophisticated technology that allows customers to be tracked from initial contact, through sales, and repeat interactions. Customers can even be understood through social networking sites. Here are some examples of some of the best tools you can use to better understand your customers.

Google Analytics

One of the first things you’ll need is a way to track your website traffic. Google may not be the absolute best analytics tool, but their service is free and they know more about page traffic and ranking than anyone else in the business – they practically invented it!

Facebook Analytics

If your company isn’t already on Facebook, it needs to be. If you do a good job of publishing your Facebook presence, your best customers will want to follow you. And when they do, you can get demographic information about them. Data like age, gender, location, and the amount of activity that each demographic group displays can all be useful information for you to learn from and integrate into your future product offerings, services, and marketing campaigns.

KISSinsights

Remember those survey takers that were mentioned earlier? Well KISSinsights offers online survey software that is built for the digital age. Instead of lengthy surveys that you need to bribe your customers to fill out, KISSinsights offers short 1 and 2 question surveys that are embedded right into a website experience. You can even control who gets a survey. If you want to know why a repeat customer is coming back to your site, you can create a question that recognizes a repeat visit and only offers a survey tailored to them. Talk about targeted marketing!

Google Alerts

Another good Google tool for tracking your business is through Google Alerts. These free alerts can be customized to inform you automatically when there is a new mention of your business, or any other keyword you choose, anywhere on the Internet. That way, you will be the first one to know when a blog has reviewed your product favorably or if you’ve been mentioned at Forbes.com.

Clearly, these are not all the customer tracking tools available to you. PURLs, LMS systems, and more can also be great tools to track your customers’ interaction with your company and get feedback from them so you can better serve their needs in the future. But these tools are a good way to start getting quality feedback from your customers quickly.

Cancer Survivor Helps to Eliminate Embarrassment by Helping Other Cancer Patients

image001

Christy Borgeld said “Never giving up and pushing forward will unlock all the potential we are capable of.” And that is exactly what Brenda did. Despite having cancer and undergoing chemo, she pressed forward. She hated and was embarrassed by the treatment gowns and did something about it…she made her own! Now, she makes them for other cancer patients called Hug Wraps.

Brenda Jones felt as if her world had ended when she was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October 2008. Being forced to put on a drab, generic, embarrassing traditional hospital gown every time she went in for treatment only made the experience worse. So with a flash of inspiration — and a crash-course in sewing — she decided to do something about it. Much to her surprise, the kimono-style wrap she designed to give herself some dignity in the waiting room started garnering requests from other patients. Today? She’s not only recovered, but she can hardly keep up with the demand for her homemade Hug Wraps from cancer patients all over the world.

“As any cancer patient knows, you can’t imagine getting that diagnosis,” Jones tells Tonic from her home in Southampton, N.J. “I remember my face just draining and going white and numb — the rollercoaster of emotions was unbelievable.” After what felt like an eternity of tests, scans, mammograms, biopsies and two surgical procedures, Jones began radiation treatment in January last year. By that point, she had simply had enough and like many cancer patients, she felt angry. “I remember walking in and the staff pointed to a dressing room and said ‘go on in there and put on a hospital gown.’” When she saw the dreary, flimsy gowns in huge piles, she broke down. “It was just another smack in the face to say ‘you are a cancer patient and you are sick,’” she recalls, emotionally.

Tears streaming down her face, she put on two of the gowns (to cover her modesty), put her coat on top and sat feeling miserable in the cold waiting room. It was during this low point that she had a brainwave. “I thought, I’ll make my own gown, a cozy, fun alternative,” and right there in that hospital waiting room, she began to imagine her perfect hospital attire. “I wanted it warm, with an open front like a kimono wrap and I wanted it to be colorful and fun, not this drab, hideous thing.”

Even though she had no idea how to sew, with a friend’s help, she soon learned the ropes and in three days, she had the perfect cover-up for her hospital visits, which were scheduled five times a week for seven weeks. “We made the first one out of an old bed sheet,” Jones says laughing. But the end result was exactly as she had imagined — bright pink, adorned with yellow hearts and super cozy. “I tried it on and the first thing I said was that it felt like a nice warm hug and that’s where I got the name from.” Wearing her Hug Wrap into the hospital the following day, she says: “Everyone’s heads turned!” Stunned as she was, more importantly, Jones had experienced her own turning point. “It gave me back my dignity, I wasn’t just a patient, with a file — I was a person.” After offering to make a similar style wrap for another woman at the hospital, the requests kept coming in.

It wasn’t long before Jones was wearing a new Hug Wrap every day for her radiation sessions. She soon realized that not only did wearing them make her feel good, but making them lifted her spirits too. “The more I made … especially now that I was on a mission to make them for other patients, the more my anger reduced,” Jones says, adding: “It gave my hands and my mind something to do.” Unable to sleep more than a couple of hours at a time, she would often get up and sew in the middle of the night. “I would put my country music on, switch the sewing machine on and just keep on sewing until I was too tired to sew anymore.”  Back then, with her second-hand machine, it took Jones up to nine hours to make each wrap. “It really took my mind off what I was going through.” On her last day of treatment, she left her doctor with all of her spare wraps, to donate to other patients. “I said ‘if nobody wants them, just throw them out.’ But I was so thrilled when people got in touch and asked for more.”

Author Brett Smuckler – Under the Same Sky – Haiti Awareness

Brett Smuckler graduated from Rollins College. Inspired by her work as an Elementary Education major and by the story of her great-grandmother, she wrote her first novel, Under the Same Sky. In this novel, the young author shows maturity and intelligence beyond her age. The innocence of Olivia and Emmett’s love is wonderfully juxtaposed against the harsh and complex world of politics and violence. Through her characters Ms. Smuckler captures the multidimensional nature of people and sends an important message that in life, things are rarely black and white.

Under the Same Sky is a passionate story of a girl and a boy whose lives are interwined by their unconditional love for each other but are continually kept apart by external circumstances.

Olivia Atwell was born and raised in a quaint but prestigious town called Newburyport, Massachusetts. Her childhood is dull and mundane due to her absent parents until she meets Emmett Stanton, a male neighbor of the same age. Olivia and Emmett became best friends at the age of five, and together their friendship endures childhood, adolescence, and the college years. After Olivia graduates colleges, she journeys to Haiti to assist in a shelter. While Olivia’s aspirations are selfless, Emmett’s objectives in life are aimed at climbing the political ladder.  After a twist in fate, these childhood friends’ lives change forever, and both of them learn a lesson of a lifetime.”

Steve Olsher

Steve OlsherSteve is a successful entrepreneur, and author of Journey To You: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming Who You Were Born to Be and Founder of The Reinvention Workshop. A sought-after TV and radio guest, his unique slant on personal development is sometimes controversial, but always compelling and entertaining.

More than ever, people are… transitioning from the mentality of “what can the world do f…or me?” to that of “what can I do for the world?” Today’s economy only compounds this issue as lifelong employees become the victims of corporate downsizing and it’s harder than ever to find work.

Self-development expert Steve Olsher advises that the solution to these problems is found within. By tapping who you were born to be and heeding the pre-sent blueprint that already exists, a life of self-reliance, fulfillment and contentment awaits.

He has worked as a radio and nightclub DJ (“Mr. Bold”); owned his own nightclub at the age of 20 (The Funky Pickle!); developed a wine and spirits catalog business (LiquorJourney to You by Steve Olsher on DivaTalkRadio by Wire); launched one of the internet’s first fully-functional e-commerce websites in 1995 (LiquorByWire.com); is the chairman and co-founder of San Francisco-based Liquor.com; is the president and founder of Bold Development, one of Chicago’s largest boutique real estate development companies; and is the founder and facilitator of The Reinvention Workshop.

All of his broad, real-world experiences have contributed to the ground-breaking, field-tested ideas found within Journey To You. Steve lives in Chicago with his wife, Lena, and their three sons, Bobby, Isaiah and Xavier—who remind him every day why his motto is “Let Love Rule.”

Truth in Business: Why Honesty is the Best Policy

he theme of truth as a virtue became intertwined with American mythology since the founding of The Republic. Myths surrounding the “Father of the Country” include a fable of a young George Washington cutting down his father’s cherry tree. When asked about why the tree no longer stood, Washington freely admitted to cutting the tree down and said “I cannot tell a lie.”

Myth versus Reality

While fables make for fun lessons, telling the truth seemed to become a lost art as the United States grew up. Tales of Washington’s stand against lying seemed to have been forgotten by the 1980s, when President Ronald Reagan ordered members of his Republican Party to never speak ill about another member. By the 1990s President Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury.

Truth-telling seemed to be a lost art and certainly not as important as gaining power. It might have been difficult to track statements in the past, but telling lies now has become risky business.

Truth in the Information Age

Clinton’s trouble seems like a harbinger to a new era. Telling the truth has become the only way for businesses or politicians to stay out of trouble. Virtually every statement made by prominent people gets recorded, and the internet provides the means to broadcast. Lying might provide a temporary gain, but the long term effects can damage a brand or a candidate.

One of the best recent examples comes from the race for Barack Obama’s former seat in the U.S. Senate. Republican Congressman Mark Kirk seemed posed for a landslide victory until numerous public statements he made were shown to be lies. Kirk now faces a difficult race for the seat.

Lying Obsolete?

Kirk’s experience shows that it has become nearly impossible for politicians to lie. And Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell’s run for Senator has been plagued by another feature of the digital age. Her embarrassing comments, including her claim of “dabbling” in witchcraft, have turned off many independent voters. If a lie or embarrassing moment is caught there appears to be a better than average chance that the moment will be exposed.

Business Lies Most Damaging

If politicians cannot get away with embellishing their records, then businesses have almost no chance of cooking numbers. While there are more ways than ever to be caught in a lie, recent history shows that even the most successful and powerful businesses might be willing to distort the truth for short term profits. An immediate windfall might benefit a few people, but the long term effects of the lie could destroy the company or set back the entire economy.

The fall of Enron serves as perhaps the greatest cautionary tale for businesses tempted to lie. The energy giant went from a billionaire powerhouse to a penniless joke once its false profit reports were revealed. The scandal even brought down accounting firm Arthur Anderson.

How Do We Combat Lying in Business?

  • Using a CRM where transparency is the best policy- others can view documents you’re working on and see any changes that have been made.
  • Employ a check and balance system for teams, where in between projects each member shares what they’ve worked on, so as to assign the correct areas in the following projects.
  • If you’re not using a CRM and working in the cloud, Google Docs for instance, make sure you’re using the appropriate privacy settings so that others cannot get into documents and share information if not appropriate.

From small businesses using CRM’s software to the most powerful businessmen and companies in the world, the lesson from the fable of Washington and the cherry tree remains surprisingly relevant. Telling the truth is no longer just a virtue. In the information age, it has become necessary.
