Bang for Your Buck – Locations that Really Are a Great Deal

party in the skyGiven the global economic downturn and wildly fluctuating exchange rates, many holidaymakers are searching for those elusive holiday destinations that really do offer value for money. The holiday market is extremely competitive these days, making it hard to cut through the huge amount of last minute deals, budget flights and cheap holidays to pinpoint locations that really are a great deal. What follows is a look at ways to enjoy a great holiday at a great location without breaking the bank.

A good place to start when planning your holiday is the Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, which gauges the cost of a range of items abroad to identify which are the cheapest locations once you are there. This is extremely important at the moment, as the pound has not been doing well against the Euro. In terms of affordability, Spain and Portugal topped the chart of 36 nations.

Portugal has witnessed a 49% fall in prices over the last year. One of the key reasons for this price fall was the worrying decline in holidaymakers to popular resorts in the Algarve. Portuguese hotels, bars and restaurants lowered their prices to stimulate more business, which prompted hotels, bars and restaurants in popular Spanish resorts like the Costas to do the same to compete for the year’s holidaymakers. As the exchange rate also improved, Portugal and Spain have become excellent holiday locations in 2011 for a great deal.

Of course, there are the flights and accommodation to factor in, but a good search of the market will reveal a number of competitively priced deals and there are always last minute holiday deals to take advantage of.

Comparing the holiday item costs with the average flight costs reveals a number of other locations which represent a great deal for holidaymakers. The Czech Republic is very competitively priced and a trip to the historical capital city of Prague will make a wonderful holiday. Bulgaria also makes an affordable holiday destination, with a beautiful sandy coastline on the Black Sea to the east of the country. Hungary is another alternative to the usual European destinations, boasting stunning scenery and the magnificent capital city of Budapest to visit. British holidaymakers are also enjoying far better exchanges rates for Bulgaria and Hungary, making them excellent value locations to visit overall.

If you are a little more adventurous and want a holiday where, after your flight costs, you can move from cheap accommodation to cheap accommodation enjoying extremely low priced food and drink and seeing incredible sights, then these two exotic locations represent great deals, especially if you plan an extended vacation or a sabbatical.

Manta in Ecuador presents a great opportunity to lap up a chilled and relaxed beach town while indulging in some top surfing. Spanish and surfing lessons can be bought for as little as £3, while hotel rooms with air conditioning can be found for £7 per night. Of course, Ecuador also provides the opportunity to hike the majestic Andes and explore one of the last unspoilt regions of the world, the Amazon rainforest.

Cusco in Peru is an excellent location, as Peru is less expensive than Argentina, Brazil and Chile. There are fabulous markets to discover and the historic Inca buildings are a joy to explore. Double rooms can be found for as little as £10 per night and the Peruvian cuisine is also very cheap. A friendly city with a host of incredible treks to enjoy, Cusco is a must visit.

Whatever your holiday plans, a little research will unearth a wealth of locations that represent a great deal. If this has inspired you to get abroad then our friends at hotel club have a range of hotels in destinations from London to Taipei!

Team Collaboration – Tips and Tools

CollaborationBeing a good team player can be a challenge. If the group contains several participants with strong personalities and conflicting viewpoints, it can be even more difficult. If you’re the team leader, smooth the way whenever you can by facilitating team collaboration with these tips and tools:

1. Use OpenOffice Tools

Because OpenOffice works on virtually any operating system, you’ll never have to worry about team members who insist on using their Mac device while the rest of the team prefers Windows. With the O3Spaces extension for OpenOffice, you’ll even have one of the best team sharing and document management solutions available today! This tool includes a server component, a web-based user interface, and a desktop app.

2. The Zoho Suite

This collection of online editing and group organization programs is in a constant state of enhancement for ever-improving features. It’s most popular features today include:

  • group editing
  • document sharing
  • milestone tracking
  • group chat
  • invoice creation

3. Gather Around the Campfire

Campfire provides one of the best ways to chat as a group for those all-important brainstorming sessions. This tool is searchable and provides an easy uploading method to share important documentation and other files. You can close off the chat session for privacy or link additional participants into the product. Campfire works within a standard browser and changes the page title whenever new chatters arrive. It also works with several third-party clients and input tools.

4. Easy File Sharing with Present.io

Use Drop.io to store up to 100 MB of files in a variety of formats without registering or installing any software. Next, gather your team around this set of files to discuss the pros and cons of each one. If a team member isn’t close to a computer, they can call in teleconference-style or leave MP3 messages for the rest to hear. The “drop” administrator controls the show by placing each file in viewing sequence. Considering that your team only needs the URL to join the review session, this is the easiest file sharing tool out there.

5. Take a Picture with MindMeister

This web-based development tool perfectly illustrates the old adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” MindMeister allows the team to visually sketch their thoughts by using branching, notations, and other organizational markings. You can even email additions later if inspiration strikes before the next team session. This solution also allows the user to share or publish their own mental diagrams to save valuable time by quickly explaining their thoughts to co-workers. This often removes the need to take extra time with a verbal explanation.

6. DimDIm is Anything but Dimwitted

Save time and money by creating your own webinars instead of traveling for group meetings. When your team is spread out across the country, or the world, getting together face-to-face can be a challenge. Up to 20 team players can sit in on a presentation and up to three can use the microphone.

With these great tools, your team should work together like a well-oiled machine!

Best Websites for Travel Deals for Your Next Business Travel

San Francisco's Financial District - Palm Tree from Embarcadero StreetAlmost every individual has dreams of travel grandeur. May it be exotic Africa or romantic Paris, exploring beyond your normal place of residence is a desire wanting to be satisfied. And thanks to the internet and the rise of social media, no longer are we confined to the brick and mortar travel agencies.

We can now have the ability to make our own itineraries to fit our budget. Yet the process may be daunting with so many websites claiming they got the best deals for you. So to help you navigate and cut down the hours you would be spending surfing through sites, here are the best travel sites to assist you in finally landing on that dream destination.

Airfare

You will agree that often finding the cheapest airfare may not be exactly your cup of tea. I know some people who prefer the shortest duration or would want to fly on their choice airline.  Either way it is best to check out directly the website of the Airline you fancy or who has the right flight or route for you.

Check out their Twitter pages and Fan pages or better yet be a follower to get alerts on the latest deals that they may offer exclusively to social media savvy customers. Or let aggregator sites do the comparison for you. Among the most popular are CheapestAirfare AirFareWatchdog, FareCompare and Fly.com. Checking out these sites will save you lots of time and energy over browsing every airline’s websites.

Hotels

Unless you are after staying on a specific hotel, then similar to finding the best deals in fares, check out sites that can give you what’s the best deals at a glance. Try Kayak, GetARoom and TravelZoo that not only features current hotel deals but tickets to popular tourist attractions as well.

Follow popular group hotel chains in Twitter or Facebook to grab the latest hotel offers. There are also many online companies that you can sign up on to get exclusive notifications of special deals from major hotels. Jetsetter.com is one of them and so is Off & Away which features an auction format for the best rooms. You may also opt to check out newly opened hotels on your destination city with the help of Google, as these new businesses are likely to offer huge discounts to attract  its initial customers.

Other types of Lodging

If staying at hotels does not suit your budget then consider short-term vacation houses where you can stay comfortably, cook your own meals and save heaps. AirBnB, VRBO and HomeAway can give you options. If you are a frequent traveler then why not consider time sharing or swapping places with other jet setters? HomeExchange or HomeLink are excellent sites for this kind of venture.

Land Costs

This is a hidden cost that many planners fail to take into account so make sure you have a budget for this item. As you will surely need to go places and explore as would any tourist.  And again, being informed of your options is a good weapon to have on travels.  Plan your itinerary well using Google Maps to determine distances and transportation options. If a car is needed then use the web or download apps like Bing’s Gas Prices app to find where can you gas up for less.

Want to share a ride with other people to split the transportation cost? Then check out  ZimRide, Live Silver Prices and RideShare and find other travellers who are keen on saving too. It is also wise to sign up way ahead on the latest trend in grabbing huge discounts on almost anything, from admission tickets, tours and adventure packages on your city of destination. Groupon, Gilt Groupe or LivingSocial regularly offer such deals which may make your vacation extra special without costing you an arm.

Best Work Done at Home? Maybe!

If you run a business with employees that work in-house, you may be surprised to know that you can get the best work done at home.Studies have shown that many people get more work done when they work at home than they do in an office environment. This can be due to many different factors such as:

  • Distractions: Employees can get distracted by other people in the office, and it’s not difficult for this scenario to happen. Office gossip, frequent noise, questions, and interruptions happen all day long and can contribute significantly to an employee’s lack of production.
  • Daydreaming: This doesn’t mean that your employees are lazy or not working hard. Most people would rather be at home or anywhere else other than an office, so sometimes they tend to let their minds wander to the other things going on in their life. This is a normal occurrence.
  • Transportation Issues: Sometimes your employees can’t even make it into the office due to a number of reasons, whereas working from home might mean more productivity because, even if they’re snowed in, they can still work at home. If the car is not running, employees can still work at home. If someone feels well enough to get out of bed and onto a computer but not well enough to get dressed and commute to work, he or she can still work at home.

Can you get the best work done at home? Maybe! That concept can be visualized with something called virtualization. This allows a business to run more than one application and operating system on a single server. What this means to you is that your employees can work from home while still utilizing the system that you have in your office. This allows you to prioritize your company business and maximize your server’s resources.

This also gives you the capability to allow your employees to telecommute. You can choose to allow just a few employees to do this, or all of them; it all depends on your personal preference. This is a perfect solution for an employee that needs to work from home temporarily due to an illness, maternity issue, or any number of reasons that might keep someone from working in a conventional office setting. Consider the savings you can expect. If the majority of your employees work from home, you are cutting down on utilities costs, insurance costs, and the cost of supplies. In fact, you could run your entire office from your own home and not have to worry about paying for a brick and mortar office, if that is the route you choose.

Some of the benefits of virtualization include:

  1. Smooth testing and development environments
  2. Speedy resource provisioning and workload harmony
  3. Affordable business stability strategies

Remember, with virtualization, you can theoretically run an entire business with as many employees as you wish and never have to commute to an office. Your employees will be more satisfied and get more work done while you and your company reap the rewards.

How Should ‘Viral Video’ Be Defined?

ViralLast week I came across ths very old but still valid BBC article attempting to define the term "viral video". This post prompted me to categorize definitions collected in the post as well as look for more definitions. Now, let’s see what I have managed to find (please add any if you know more concepts and approaches).

"[Being] viral is an effect, not a strategy" is the best quote from that article, of course. Really, being called a marketing ‘tactic’, viral video is something we almost never can control because that’s for people to spread it. Therefore, it is hardly a ‘tactic’ or ‘strategy’.

More definitions:

General definitions:

A viral: a "video that spreads quickly via the internet."

Viral – is what people want to talk about:

Of course it’s viral – we’re talking about it, some of us have blogged about it, others have sent the link out.

Emphasis on purpose:

A video… spread by "word of mouth" on the internet or by e-mail for humorous, political or marketing purposes… (via wiktionary.org)

Emphasis on content:

"A virus slowly picks up momentum because people feel they’ve found something which they want to pass on to other people. There’s something about the content that infects them and then they pass that on in a sort of e-sneeze.

"Creating entertaining or informative messages that are designed to be passed along in an exponential fashion, often electronically or by email." (via WOMMA)

Toyota’s Love of Twitter: 3 Examples of Toyota Using It

toyota-twitter-01

Doing well across the board with social media, Twitter has proven the favorite resource of Toyota executives. Tweeting deals, industry information, and clever quips for their fans, Toyota implements and leverages social media in a winning strategy to remain relevant in the new millennium of marketing.

Specifically on Twitter, Toyota has managed several successful campaigns, events, and incentive programs. Here are a few of the most notable and recent:

  • US Toyota President and COO Jim Lentz appeared live to interact with interested customers on Twitter, responding with thoughtful introspection and playful banter.
  • Toyotathon Shareathon used both Facebook and Twitter to leverage a campaign that went exceedingly well, as any program giving away free money should!
  • Using Twitter chats in the past, Jim Lentz created an atmosphere with customers that any one of them can reach the very COO of Toyota. This empowering feeling has given the name “Toyota” a familiar touch, and made it more accessible to those who don’t know the brand by usage and ownership.

Elsewhere in the world of marketing, Toyota appeared with a strong brand message as well. Making appearances on Today on NBC, on ABC, and NPR, COO Jim Lentz has become a household name, which in turn, brings Toyota home for customers. As the first corporate executive to ever do so, Lentz made a bold appearance on the youthful Digg Dialogg program. Lentz, with his social media team, is revolutionizing the auto industry’s approach to marketing.

Young drivers, parents buying vehicles for younger drivers, and even tried-and-true Toyota owners, are falling deeper in love with a brand that shows consideration for its fans, on and off Twitter. Toyota is embracing social media so well that it has even become a case study for other car brands.

Monitoring Your Business: From Social Media To Customer Service

Towards the LightOne of the most important aspects of marketing your company is understanding why people like your products and how they are finding them so that you can make your products better and pursue the most lucrative channels of finding new customers. But how can you find out this information if you can’t understand your customers? Although you can’t sit down and have a cup of coffee with each customer to get their feedback, you can begin to understand your customers’ demographics, desires, preferences, and more by tracking your customers through different aspects of your marketing campaign.

Although tracking customers used to be the job of survey takers standing in malls, today there is more sophisticated technology that allows customers to be tracked from initial contact, through sales, and repeat interactions. Customers can even be understood through social networking sites. Here are some examples of some of the best tools you can use to better understand your customers.

Google Analytics

One of the first things you’ll need is a way to track your website traffic. Google may not be the absolute best analytics tool, but their service is free and they know more about page traffic and ranking than anyone else in the business – they practically invented it!

Facebook Analytics

If your company isn’t already on Facebook, it needs to be. If you do a good job of publishing your Facebook presence, your best customers will want to follow you. And when they do, you can get demographic information about them. Data like age, gender, location, and the amount of activity that each demographic group displays can all be useful information for you to learn from and integrate into your future product offerings, services, and marketing campaigns.

KISSinsights

Remember those survey takers that were mentioned earlier? Well KISSinsights offers online survey software that is built for the digital age. Instead of lengthy surveys that you need to bribe your customers to fill out, KISSinsights offers short 1 and 2 question surveys that are embedded right into a website experience. You can even control who gets a survey. If you want to know why a repeat customer is coming back to your site, you can create a question that recognizes a repeat visit and only offers a survey tailored to them. Talk about targeted marketing!

Google Alerts

Another good Google tool for tracking your business is through Google Alerts. These free alerts can be customized to inform you automatically when there is a new mention of your business, or any other keyword you choose, anywhere on the Internet. That way, you will be the first one to know when a blog has reviewed your product favorably or if you’ve been mentioned at Forbes.com.

Clearly, these are not all the customer tracking tools available to you. PURLs, LMS systems, and more can also be great tools to track your customers’ interaction with your company and get feedback from them so you can better serve their needs in the future. But these tools are a good way to start getting quality feedback from your customers quickly.

Truth in Business: Why Honesty is the Best Policy

he theme of truth as a virtue became intertwined with American mythology since the founding of The Republic. Myths surrounding the “Father of the Country” include a fable of a young George Washington cutting down his father’s cherry tree. When asked about why the tree no longer stood, Washington freely admitted to cutting the tree down and said “I cannot tell a lie.”

Myth versus Reality

While fables make for fun lessons, telling the truth seemed to become a lost art as the United States grew up. Tales of Washington’s stand against lying seemed to have been forgotten by the 1980s, when President Ronald Reagan ordered members of his Republican Party to never speak ill about another member. By the 1990s President Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury.

Truth-telling seemed to be a lost art and certainly not as important as gaining power. It might have been difficult to track statements in the past, but telling lies now has become risky business.

Truth in the Information Age

Clinton’s trouble seems like a harbinger to a new era. Telling the truth has become the only way for businesses or politicians to stay out of trouble. Virtually every statement made by prominent people gets recorded, and the internet provides the means to broadcast. Lying might provide a temporary gain, but the long term effects can damage a brand or a candidate.

One of the best recent examples comes from the race for Barack Obama’s former seat in the U.S. Senate. Republican Congressman Mark Kirk seemed posed for a landslide victory until numerous public statements he made were shown to be lies. Kirk now faces a difficult race for the seat.

Lying Obsolete?

Kirk’s experience shows that it has become nearly impossible for politicians to lie. And Republican candidate Christine O’Donnell’s run for Senator has been plagued by another feature of the digital age. Her embarrassing comments, including her claim of “dabbling” in witchcraft, have turned off many independent voters. If a lie or embarrassing moment is caught there appears to be a better than average chance that the moment will be exposed.

Business Lies Most Damaging

If politicians cannot get away with embellishing their records, then businesses have almost no chance of cooking numbers. While there are more ways than ever to be caught in a lie, recent history shows that even the most successful and powerful businesses might be willing to distort the truth for short term profits. An immediate windfall might benefit a few people, but the long term effects of the lie could destroy the company or set back the entire economy.

The fall of Enron serves as perhaps the greatest cautionary tale for businesses tempted to lie. The energy giant went from a billionaire powerhouse to a penniless joke once its false profit reports were revealed. The scandal even brought down accounting firm Arthur Anderson.

How Do We Combat Lying in Business?

  • Using a CRM where transparency is the best policy- others can view documents you’re working on and see any changes that have been made.
  • Employ a check and balance system for teams, where in between projects each member shares what they’ve worked on, so as to assign the correct areas in the following projects.
  • If you’re not using a CRM and working in the cloud, Google Docs for instance, make sure you’re using the appropriate privacy settings so that others cannot get into documents and share information if not appropriate.

From small businesses using CRM’s software to the most powerful businessmen and companies in the world, the lesson from the fable of Washington and the cherry tree remains surprisingly relevant. Telling the truth is no longer just a virtue. In the information age, it has become necessary.
