I LOVE shoes and anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE SHOES! The higher the heel, the better! You see, I’m a little over 5’3″ so with a 5″ or 6″ heel, I can look in the eyes of most people. Now don’t get me wrong, being short does have its advantages such as not being able to reach the middle or top shelf so my son or husband has to put the dishes away. However, being able to wear a cute pair of heels just adds pizzazz to any wardrobe. Here are some of my favorite tips for buying heels:
1. Stay away from something too strappy as they tend to not support your foot causing it to overcompensate balance thereby causing pain.
2. Look for a shoe that will support your arch or get an insole.
3. If you have a small back heel, find a shoe with a strap for a better fit.
4. If you’re not used to wearing heels, stay under a 3″ heel so that it will not offset your gait.
5. A shoe with a front platform will allow for more padding to the ball of your foot.
6. If you’re under 5’5″, don’t wear ankle straps without a peep toe. Otherwise you will look shorter as the strap will stop the eye from going all the way down your foot (okay, that was a fashion tip…but it is shoe related!)
7. If you’re not used to buying heels, refrain from purchasing online. Until you get very comfortable with wearing heels, always go to the store to try on before you buy.
8. To be safe, always have a traditional pair of pumps in your shoe closet. Not only are they classy, but they go well with any clothing style. If you’re going to the office, the traditional pump will fit well with business attire. If you’re going out with girlfriends, the traditional pump will look great with jeans. If you’re shopping for the day, a traditional low-heel pump will be smashingly gorgeous with a cute pair of shorts. You cannot go wrong with the traditional pump.
9. When you find the perfect fitting shoe, buy it in every color available. There’s nothing worse than to have a pair of shoes that becomes your favorite and you realize they’ve been discontinued and you cannot buy/find them in the other colors. Hate it when that happens! So now, I buy them in every color (of course I buy the matching handbag too!)
10. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Go a little wild when buying your next pair of shoes. The more colorful your shoes are, make sure to tone down your outfit. There’s nothing like dressing up that black outfit with a colorful pair of shoes AND matching handbag. It yells class, sophistication, and excitement!
Oh, and if you’re going with an open toe or a peep toe shoe, PLEASE make sure your toes are clean and nails are polished. There’s nothing worse than to look down at a cute pair of shoes and have gnarly toes. Eww! So splurge and get a pedicure. Your feet will love you for it!
I hope you enjoyed my tips. Is there anything that I’ve missed? If so, share with me below in the comments section.
That’s it for now. Until next time, wear your heels well & be blessed!

ANDI says
can’t wear high heels – VERY poor balance…. 🙁
Kelli Claypool says
Hey Andi! Don’t be sad. Perhaps finding a nicely fit wedge will help with balance. One of the good things about wedge heels are that they conform to your foot, much like a glove, to give you stability and support. You don’t have to go with a very high wedge, so look for one with about a 2″ heel. They are very flattering and can dress up beautifully.
