Author Brett Smuckler – Under the Same Sky – Haiti Awareness

Brett Smuckler graduated from Rollins College. Inspired by her work as an Elementary Education major and by the story of her great-grandmother, she wrote her first novel, Under the Same Sky. In this novel, the young author shows maturity and intelligence beyond her age. The innocence of Olivia and Emmett’s love is wonderfully juxtaposed against the harsh and complex world of politics and violence. Through her characters Ms. Smuckler captures the multidimensional nature of people and sends an important message that in life, things are rarely black and white.

Under the Same Sky is a passionate story of a girl and a boy whose lives are interwined by their unconditional love for each other but are continually kept apart by external circumstances.

Olivia Atwell was born and raised in a quaint but prestigious town called Newburyport, Massachusetts. Her childhood is dull and mundane due to her absent parents until she meets Emmett Stanton, a male neighbor of the same age. Olivia and Emmett became best friends at the age of five, and together their friendship endures childhood, adolescence, and the college years. After Olivia graduates colleges, she journeys to Haiti to assist in a shelter. While Olivia’s aspirations are selfless, Emmett’s objectives in life are aimed at climbing the political ladder.  After a twist in fate, these childhood friends’ lives change forever, and both of them learn a lesson of a lifetime.”
