Just like everything else, finding good nail salons requires a bit of research and observation. It could mean the difference between beautiful healthy feet and hands and infected ones. Here’s some advice on choosing the right shop for you.
Before you choose a nail salon, educate yourself about how they are supposed to work. Also, know proper technique for handling nails so you come out with healthier nails and are not worse off.
Tips to Make Your Choice
- Look for licensure – Each nail technician needs a license certifying that they are approved by the state board. Also look for inspection from the state health board.
- Smell your way around – Is there a strong smell of acrylic in the place? This could mean that their ventilation system is not working properly.
- Sterilization equipment – Check to see what sterilization techniques are being used. All instruments need to be cleaned thoroughly and sterilized between clients. Make sure that a new pack of tools are opened before they work on your hands or feet.
- Cleanliness – Check around as you wait. Are the foot tubs clear of dirt rings and other residue? How about the polish selection? Is it varied and are the bottles mostly full or empty? Do employees wear gloves and coats to cover their clothing?
- Customer service – Does someone wait on you as soon as you come in the door? Do they answer questions and explain services to you? If you have a problem, is it dealt with right away?
- Services offered – What different types of techniques do they offer? Are there nail technicians who are expert in each service offered?
Checking the Technique
Here are a few things to know about nail care.
- Soak nails first – If you are getting a manicure, be sure that they offer to soak your nails in warm soapy water before they proceed. It softens the nails for polish or acrylic.
- File in one direction – Sawing back and forth can cause damage. Check to see that they move the file in one direction only.
- Bedside manner – Nothing should hurt you in a nail salon. Even clipping hangnails can be done with a minimum of discomfort. Clipping good tissue can introduce bacteria into the skin and lead to infections. If using electric buffers and files, make sure that there is no pain or burning on your skin. Be sure that your concerns and questions are followed up and taken into consideration.
- Products used – What sort of polishes, glues, acrylics and other products are used in the salon? Acrylic (methyl methacrylate) is smelly, but you shouldn’t notice it much in a well-ventilated shop. Are polish removers free of acetone and polish colors free of toluene? It will be gentler to the nail.
Mani-pedi days are a delight but only if you choose the right salon.
