Believe it or not, you don’t have to spend $20 (or more) every time you go to the movies. There are plenty of little known strategies that can save you a pile. Here are seven of the most effective:
- Wait for the DVD – True, most people won’t do this. However, patience can really save you money. But let’s face it—it’s just not the same watching at home. So if you absolutely can’t wait, here is how to save money at the theater.
- Do not buy food – Theaters make very little money on the movie itself. It’s the food they bank on. This is why movie food is always ridiculously pricey. So if you avoid buying it, you really save a lot. Getting popcorn and soda is how that $7 trip turns into $15 or $20 in the blink of an eye. If you are going to buy food, don’t get the larger sizes. Generally the medium size offers the best bang for the buck.
- Do not go on the weekends – Sometimes theaters offer discounts on certain nights, particularly early to midweek. These are the times when they get less business. So as you can imagine, the prices will be lower because of the reduced demand.
- Look for employee savings – Most people don’t realize it, but sometimes bigger companies have agreements with local cinemas for cheaper seats. It benefits the company, because it improves employee morale. And it helps the theater because they get higher attendance. How much can you save? Usually two or three dollars off the ticket price. But if you have a larger group going, this can amount to some serious discounts.
- Avoid going at night – Going during afternoons will save you money as well. Believe it or not, this can net you discounts of roughly one third to half the ticket price. Again, if you have a bigger group going this is definitely worth it.
- Go to the dollar theater – But that’s not the same! True, it might not be as much fun as being one of the first to see the movie. But you still get the feel of being “at the movies,” just without the usual movie pricing. This is one step above watching at home.
- Buy multiple tickets – There are theaters that charge less if you purchase bulk tickets at once, so this may be a good option if you love going to the movies often.
To wrap up, these tips might seem like common sense. But when you apply one or more of them, that $20 night at the movies could become $10 before you know it.
