Fashion in the 1950s was all about the art of feminine flirtation, and what’s more fun than that? While the influence of 1940s glamour is easy to see, it’s obvious that ladies in the 50s wanted to let loose and live a little! This era took subtle sexiness to the next level.
I mean, just ask Audrey and Marilyn! How can you not talk about 50s flirtation when this decade gave rise to the two reigning champions of sultry style? (Photo Credit-Left: Audrey Right: Look Alike)
I bet these styles look a little familiar! While much of 1950s casual wear mimicked the fashions of the era before, take a look at those necklines. No high necked button ups here! Women in the 1950s took spirits a little higher and dropped necklines a little bit lower. (Photo Credit: 1950s Fashion)
Now, raise your hand if you have a peplum skirt, top, or dress in your closet. You can thank the 50s for this super flattering style. How many other cuts do you know of that are able to flatter every body type and are also office appropriate? This cute touch adds just the right of feminine quirk to any look, from office to dinner and everywhere in between. (Photo Credit: 1950s Fashion)
How much cuter does fashion get? Swimwear in the 50s was all about accentuating that hourglass figure we women are so fortunate as to have been endowed with! As with all of the other trends, swimwear from this decade is all about showing feminine beauty without showing all of our skin. (Photo Credit: 1950s Fashion)
Fifties Formality
Just as with casual wear, the 50’s love of bare shoulders and clavicles made its way into formal wear as well. How stunning is that dress on the left? Formal wear of this period set out to elongate the female form with waist-hugging evening gowns and elbow grazing smoking gloves, made famous by that fashionista we all love, Ms. Hepburn. I am not a fan of the 50’s fashion trends. The only thing I do love is the famous black and white bathing suit, my mom owned a Barbie with the same one. I loved it as a child, we werent allowed to play with it 🙂

Jenn, hey to each her own! That’s so neat that the bathing suit instantly elicits childhood memories! Thanks for commenting!
