When I got to writing this post, my first thought was, “Okay, now we’re talking.” Being a child of the 90s, I grew up with a healthy appreciation for all things grunged-out. Unlike the ladylike looks of eras past, 90s fashion took a refreshing turn into deconstructed territory, seriously pushing the boundaries of femininity. I mean, what’s the point of fashion without a little evolution?
Grunge music hit the scene in a massive way in the 1990s, giving birth to iconic bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Fashionistas in the 90s channeled their inner Kurt Cobain by rocking burnout tees, acid wash jeans, and need I even say it? Flannel, flannel, flannel! Oh, and did I mention flannel? Nothing screams 90s-chic quite like a collection of plaid button ups and combat boots, am I right? (Photo Credit: 1990s Stars Set the Trends 90s Themed Party)
Have you noticed the recent trend centered around black and gold silk jackets? Laden with loops of gold chains and other classic scarf prints, you can thank the 90s for the trend’s burgeoning comeback. In the 90s, with a little help from style powerhouse Versace, these heavy-metal prints made their way into every style-savvy closet. Like the grunge trend, this look really pushed the boundaries of femininity by telling demure styles to step aside, leaving wallflowers in its golden dust. (Photo Credit: 90s Flashback)
Now this is the story all about how…
…my life got flipped, turned upside down. (This will now be stuck in your head for the next week. You’re welcome.) Who didn’t love The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 90s? Actually, who doesn’t still love it to this day? Nineties fashionistas took a page out of Will Smith’s book and brought some of those iconic 80s looks along with them into the next decade. Neon accessories and bold, comfy sweaters crept out of the 80s and into the 90s with a little help from everyone’s favorite Bel-Air gang. (Photo Credit: 1990s Fashion)
Now, if you loved the grunge-inspired plaid trend but weren’t ready to plant both feet on the dark side, you could straddle the fence in super chic plaid in ladylike cuts that paid homage to more classic styles. A great pair of plaid cigarette pants or a well tailored blazer kept fashionistas in the 90s-know without sacrificing that sense of femininity we’ve always known and loved.
