Winter is a time where many families feel that the only way to get out and enjoy the season is to spend a lot of money. Going to the theater, shopping, skiing and snowboarding hit the top of the list for expensive winter fun. However, there is a whole lot you can do in the winter that doesn’t cost much at all. Here are just a few:
- Go sledding! Sledding is a blast for children and parents. The best sleds are often the cheapest ones. Find a great sled, dress warmly, and hit the best hill in town. If need be, don’t hesitate to drive for a bit to find a great hill. After a few hours of sledding you’ll be glad you took the time to plan this virtually free activity. The best news is that once you’ve bought a sled and found that perfect sledding hill, it’s easy to enjoy this activity again and again.
- Strap on the snowshoes. Snowshoes don’t have to cost a fortune and they’re a great way to get outside. Grab a backpack and fill it with hot chocolate and pastries. Once you’ve reached your destination, fill the family up with delicious treats before you head back home. Snowshoeing enables you and your family to access nature trails and other areas which may be difficult to hike in the winter. Additionally, it’s wonderful exercise. Buy used snowshoes to save even more money.
- Family game night. Family game night is something the entire family can look forward to. Make it a tradition. Once a week or once a month, pop some popcorn, turn on some music and get the board games out. You’ll spend hours laughing and having fun and it doesn’t cost a dime. You can find great educational games online or at specialty game stores or look for used games at your local consignment stores.
- Family movie night. Family movie night works much like family game night. Order a pizza, or better yet have a pizza making party. Once everyone has their pizza it’s time to settle in for a movie. Netflix offers streaming movies now through their Roku service which makes family game night convenient. Another option is Redbox. They are everywhere and the movies only cost a little over a dollar. Or if you have a cable hook-up, you may have services like On Demand or other streaming movie features. All in all, family movie night can come in well under ten dollars. That’s a great way to spend a cold winter night, or day with the family.
- Museum free days. Many museums and even botanical parks and zoos offer free days. The winter is the perfect time to take advantage of these days. Check your local listings or contact your local establishments to find out when they offer their free admittance days. Plan ahead and enjoy a winter day with the family.
The cold weather doesn’t mean you have to stay inside or spend a fortune. Get creative. Have some good family fun on a budget.
