IRON! Yep, one of the symptoms of an iron deficiency is the crave for ice. Who knew? Well, my doctor…that’s who! For the past three years, I have had extreme cravings for ice. I just could not get enough. In fact, I would go through two 7 lbs bags of ice per day. The official diagnosis is called Pica. According to WebMD.com, Pica is a non-nutritional craving, such as ice, dirt, and paint (Thank God, I only craved ice!)
My Iron deficiency was the result of having non-stop heavy periods. For three years, I had menstrual bleeding which lead to severe anemia, which then lead to my craving for ice. I never craved anything, except when pregnant, so my increased desire for ice was just plain weird to me. A few months ago, I underwent a total hysterectomy and my craving for ice went away. It’s amazing to me how our body operates.
So, if you are craving ice, check your Iron…you may just a deficiency.
